Nabil's Introductory Letter

 Dear Professor Brad Blackstone,

Please let me take this opportunity to introduce myself, I am Nabil Khairi a student in your Critical Thinking and Communicating class. I am Year 1 student studying Civil Engineering in Singapore Institute of Technology. I graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic in 2021 with Diploma of Sustainable Urban Design and Engineering before serving National Service (NS) as a Community Policing Officer at Choa Chu Kang Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC). My interest in engineering developed when I was in Institute of Technical Education and graduated in 2018 in Civil & Structural Engineering Design.

One of my notable strengths is being reliable as evidenced by my time in NS. I was given a task to be the leader of my peers to lead projects and coordinate deployment of my peers, tasks such as school talks, community engagements and more. I have grown as a leader from nurturing resilience, fostering collaboration to delivering impactful results. I am eager to continue this journey to greater achievement. While I value my strengths, I am also aware that everyone has areas for improvement. I am dedicated to addressing my weaknesses and continually striving for personal and professional development.

One area I am actively working on is communication skills which I have identified as a potential area for improvement. I tend to get nervous when I give a presentation and language used for spoken and written is very poor too. I am taking steps to enhance my skills in this area such as reading the news and speak English regularly.

In conclusion, I believe that acknowledging both strengths and weaknesses is integral to personal and professional development.

Thank you for your time!

Best regards,

Nabil Khairi

  5. Dear Nabil,

Thank you for this highly informative and well articulated letter. You address each of the areas of the prompt and illustrate those with specific information that is interesting. For instance, you mention having served as a CPO while in NS. You mention a number of roles that you filled in that capacity. What would have bolstered this as a reflection would be for you to explain to your readers what lasting impact this has had on you.

You also address your comm skills needs and mention both presenting and writing as areas you hope to improve. In terms of writing, this is a fluent post, but there are a couple areas to consider:
    1. lack of parallel verb forms
-- I am taking steps to enhance my skills in this area such as reading the news and speak English regularly. > ?
    2. overuse of caps
See paragraph 1. (One example: ...studying Civil Engineering.)

I appreciate the effort and look forward to learning more from you this term.

    Cheers,

    Brad
